The present study has been performed to elucidate the effect of engine design factors such as the geometry of the combustion chamber, the surface area of the combustion chamber, the compression ratio, the gas movement in the cylinder and the material of the cylinder head on the heat loss to the coolant in 4-cycle S. I. engines. It is shown that the amount of heat loss to the coolant decreases when a hemispherical combustion chamber and higher compression ratio are used. It also decreases as the gas velocity in the cylinder decreases or the material with lower thermal conductance is used.
