Recently, due to need for longer blades(e.g., 40 inches long) titanium alloy is aimed to use as blade material, which 12 % Cr stainless steel has been used. The latter has been protected with Co-base alloy against erosion and has demonstrated good performance thus far. The longer blade with higher peripherical speed is subjected to more severe conditions involving erosion caused by water droplets in wet steam. Because titanium alloy will not accept application of a Co-base alloy, a new erosion-shield material shonld be developed. Prior to the design of longer blade, a shorter blade (23 inches long) of titanium alloy had been put on a 50-MW unit, which has been in service for 15 years. This paper reports that the predicted erosion rate, which had been derived from laboratory tosts, corresponded quantitatively to the actual observed resunts on the 50-MW unit.
