Cable terminating techniques, which join cables to repeaters, play an important role in high reliability repeatered submarine optical transmission systems. Two basic cable terminating techniques have been studied here. The first is strength member termination by metal calking. The selection of the metal, grip length design and estimation of long term stability are described. The second is optical fiber termination. Here, fibers are protected from being pulled into the cable under tension by terminating the center wire of the fiber unit. As a result, cable to repeater joints thus designed have been tested successfully in (5 000〜8 000 m deepsea).
