A continuously variable transmission (CVT) capable of high rotation has been developed by applying 3K-type planetary gear system to traction drive. The CVT is characterized by higher speed ratio than those reported previously. The power loss at the contact area is evaluated by using the Johnson & Tevaarwerk's non-linear viscoelastic model as a rheological model which explains the shearing behavior of oil film and by estimating the sliding velocity including spin effect within the contact ellipse. The efficiency can be calculated with accuracy under a wide range of operating condition by comprehending the effects of pressure, oil temperature and speed, etc. on the properties of the viscoelastic model. Furthermore, the validity of this method for calculating efficiency was verified by measuring those of the CVT in practice.
