In deep-drawing of titanium sheet, heavy wear and seizure occur on the die face. And there have been almost no reports on the trial that thermal spraying film on the dies is used in order to improve the endurance of them. In this paper, the adaptability of thermal spraying film on dies for forming of titanium sheet is inspected. AL_2O_3-TiO_2, Aluminum-Bronze and other few materials are spraycoated on the face of the blank-holder and the die, and deep-drawing operation of titanium sheet up to 50 times is performed for each coated film. Microscopic variation in the surface structure with operation is measured in detail by the use of the surface detector of traveling-touch needle type. As for the Al_2O_3-TiO_2 film, it is found that on the blank-holder the development of surface roughening is slow and no seizure occurs, and that seizure takes place on the die face but at a lower level than on the quenched S 45 C die with no film. Unlike other coating methods, the spray-coated film can be thickened(up to 1 mm). Furthermore, especially Al_2O_3-TiO_2 requires low cost. All these factors lead us to the conclusion that the spray-coated Al_2O_3-TiO_2 film is effectively usable to te dies for sheet metal forming.
