The present paper first theoretically describes that galloping in overhead transmission lines is a phenomenon of nonlinear self-excited vibration of a distributed continuous system, due to the variation in the angle of attack caused by rotational motion. The paper then explains empirically and theoretically that an antigalloping system can be designed as a compensating device which stabilizes the self-excited vibration of overhead transmission lines.
