This paper proposes a new method for optimizing the selective assembly process in an automated continuous production system, in which two kinds of components are continuously provided into corresponding buffer storages and the stored components are selectively assembled to units. Using the proposed method, ( 1 ) the maximum matching rate is obtained with the condition of making the mean value of absolute differences between the relevant properties of matched components as small as possible, and ( 2 ) the buffer sizes are automatically controlled to reduce the number of unmatched components remaining in buffer storages when the number of successfully assembled units reaches the ordered number. The proposed method is compared with the conventional grouping method in various situations through computer simulations. Simulation results show that better performance is achieved using the proposed method rather than that by the grouping method.
