In order to clarify the Acoustic Emission (AE) characteristics of ceramics, the authors observed AE signals in the three point bending test of P L S Si_3N_4 specimen. For the specimen having bending strength over certain value, AS associated with slow crack growth is observed before final failure. At the elevated temperature, the same phenomena as well as at room temperature are observed. These results indicate that AE technique can be effective as a screening means for Si_3N_4.
