In this paper, I discuss about the political activities of Mirza Malkom Khan (1833-1908), an Iranian politician, in the late 1850's. His political activities in this period were represented by two categories, writing a treatise titled "Ketabche-ye Gheibi" ("The Book of Mystery") and establishing a pseudo-masonic organization named "Faramushkhaneh" ("The House of Oblivion"). "Ketabche-ye Gheibi" is said to be the first treatise concerning the necessity of the modernization of Iran. In this treatise, he dealt with the policies such as the establishment of the rule by the law (qanun), the separation of the legislative branch from the administrative one, the establishment of the rights of the individual, the plans for the financial reestablishment and so on. These propositions generally agreed with those of "the reformist officers" who, within the government, wanted to promote the modernization of Iran from the 1860's till the 80's. Therefore, it may be said that "Ketabche-ye Gheibi" marked the starting point of their activities. "Faramushkhaneh" was the organization established by Malkom Khan about 1858. The realities of this organization is scarcely known because of the limitation of the historical materials. But, this organization is assumed to have freemasonry elements, such as unique ceremonies of initiation. The members of "Faramushkhaneh" were considered to be sympathizers of Malkom Khan's plans for the reform, so it is presumed that this organization was established to actualize his ideas. But, this organization was dissolved in the result of the prohibition by Naser al-Din Shah in October 1861. After that, Malkom Khan was obliged to leave Iran, and his early political activities came to an end.
