Heat transfer characteristics of a latent heat storage unit with a finned tube have been experimentally studied on solidification and melting processes by comparing them with those of a heat storage unit with a bare tube. As the result, it is shown that the heat flux for the finned tube is much larger than that for the bare tube. Timewise variations of the feat flux are explained from the results of observations of solidification and melting layers and mesurements of temperature distributions. The effects of non-dimensional parameters, i.e., NTU (the number of transfer units), Biot number and Stephan number, on the solidification fraction, the melting fraction and the heat transfer effectiveness are also shown.
