The interference effect of notches on yield point load is analysed by the upper and lower bound theorems for a specimen with double U-notches which is subjected to tensile load under the plane strain and axisymmetrical deformation. The notch pitch range influencing the interference effect on yield point load obtained by theory is in good agreement with that on general yielding load obtained by experiment. The ki-nematically admissible velocity field with velocity discontinuity and the statically admissible stress field with stress discontinuity employed are proved to be available in predicting the interference effect of notches. These methods of calculating the upper and lower bounds can be applied to the problem of the interference effect of V-notches or cracks.
