Experimental and theoretical research works have been conducted to make clear the dynamic characteristics of tilting pad gas journal bearing supported by rotary spring. First, experimental results on the effects of the moment of inertia of the pad and the bearing clearance are compared with theoretical calculations by frequency response method to confirm that the theory is effective to predict the dynamic characteristics of this kind of bearing. Second, the effects of the other design parameters, especially the effect of the stiffness of pad support rotary spring, are investigated theoretically. Finally, theoretically predicted maps of whirl instability threshold, which is the main interest in the bearing design, are presented.
