A new method has been developed to measure simultaneously the thermal conductivity and the thermal diffusivity of a flat plate specimen under arbitrary heating and radiating conditions. The principle of the method is based on the Laplace transform of the heat conduction equation and the Fourier equation, and the required measurement is only temperature-time responses at three or four positions in a given specimen and the standard reference specimen which are brought into contact with each other. A number of practical measuring systems are proposed. The method is verified and examined theoretically and experimentally. The main feature of the new method, in comparing with the other traditional methods, is ability to measure the properties accurately with a relatively simple apparatus and without difficult techniques.
