A two-dimensional jet injected into a cavity which is a hexahedron in shape, shows periodic oscillation under certain conditions. Flow visualization studies (aluminium tracer method) are conducted, and it is clarified that a pair of vortices induced on both sides of the jet plays an important role in the oscillatory phenomenon. Some analytical studies, i.e., numerical ana1ysis of the jet flow in the cavity and flow study by conformal mapping method, are also conducted. And both results, experimental and analytical, are compared. Based on the results of above studies, a mathematical model of oscillatory jet is presented.
