In 2 nd Report, discussions on the ignition for the case of supplying both the main and the auxiliary fuel are presented. In general, auxiliary (suction) fuel undergoes prereaction and produces intermediate products which promote the ignition of main fuel. To investigate the effects of ignition quality, volatility and amount of injected fuel, injection timing, and motoring speed on the ignition in cold start, some experiments were carried out. From these results, it was found that the prereaction was closely related to the cold start performance of a diesel engine. The result of experiments on a new method of improving the cold starting performance by throttling the suction air moderately is explained. If the proposed method will be employed, the temperature of cold start could be lowered by more than 10℃.
