The errors in gears used for power transmission in machine tools may generate not only noise, but also the undesirable effect on the surface of the work. This report relates the effects between the surface finish and the errors in the gear train. Experimental data were obtained on the practical lathes and shaper. In this sort of investigation, what really matters is the total angular position error of gear train. The authors contrived a new method of measuring statically the total angular position error of gear train in the assembled state. In order to study the mechanism of the deveropment of a gear mark, the vibration of the main spindle under machining was measured and then the surface of the work was inspected. It was concluded that the errors in gears force the spindle to bend and vibrate and consequently generate the unevenness on the finished surface. The authors pointed out the close relation between the magnitude of the errors in gears and the surface roughness.
