The magnitude of thermal displacement of each part as well as the change in distance between the nose of the main spindle and the upper flat of the table of a knee-type vertical milling machine is calculated by simple equations on the basis of temperature distribution in the machine tool and recognized that it is good agreement with the experimental result. Then, the most effective means for minimizing the magnitude of relative displacement between the cutting tool and the work-piece are determined with these analytical equations for estimating the behaviour of each structural component of the machine under thermal disturbance. The calculating method in this paper can be readily applied in estimating the vertical component of thermal deformation not only of the vertical milling machine but also of a machine a column.
