In this paper, the influences of the gaseous jet atmosphere on the shapes of builtup edge (B.U.E.) were investigated : by quick-stopping the orthogonal turning of the steel (S45C) tube ends. Experimental results are as follows. The oxygen jet atmosphere was found to be effective to change the shape to a wedge type in the range of low cutting speeds where the nose type of B.U.E. occurred in normal atmosphere (i.e., conventional dry type), but nitrogen jet atmosphere was not. The size depended on the supplying conditions of oxygen jet where the jet was supplied simultaneously at the beginning of turning or subsequently. In the former case, a small wedge type of B.U.E. and thick chips were formed and the direction of the flow of metals in the chip was inverse to that of secondary deformation zone on the tool face. But in the latter case, a large wedge type of B.U.E. and thin chips were obtained.
