A rotor supported by a controlled magnetic thrust bearing is apt to have conical and cylindrical mode whirls because of the lack in the radial control power. It is generally considered that such whirls are caused by the characteristics of the control circuit and hysteresis of the magnetic materials, so that the major part of research on the magnetic bearing has been directed toward the stability of the control system and the restraining devices for self-excited vibration. The rotor should, however, have precession, nutation and resonance between the above motions and rotation because the rotor is supported by a sort of spring. Therefore this paper investigated the whirls by taking gyro-effects into consideration and assuming that a radial restoring force is proportional to its radial displacement and so on. Reasonable qualitative agreement between the experimental and theoretical results on the whirls was recognized.
