The natural convection heat transfer from a vertical plate with a uniform surface temperature to a thermally stratified fluid was studied. An analysis was performed with the aid of a perturbation method and numerical calculations of first to third order perturbation equations were carried out for Prandtl numbers 0.72,1,5 and 10. Local heat transfer coefficients, velocity and temperature profiles were measured in use of the water as a fluid. The results agree with the above calculated results. The local heat transfer coefficients in the case of a thermally stratified fluid increase as compared with the local height. The velocity in the boundary layer represents a lower value as compared with that in an isothermal fluid. A region of lower temperatures than the local ambient temperature occurs within the boundary layer.
