For photoelastic testing to establish the complicated thermal boundary condition which varies in place and also in time, the author conceived a method to adhere metal foil band type electric resistance heaters around the model and to control the generating heat flux of each heater independently. As examples, two thermal boundary conditions 1) heating by fluid, 2) non-uniform circumferential heating, were simulated by this method on a model of thick wall hollow cylinder. The given transient and complicated temperature distribution was realized in the model, and the adhered foil band heater did not give any bad influence on the model. The thermal stresses obtained corresponded closely to the analytical one. Thus, the test results verify the excellency of this method for thermal stress analysis of the photoelastic model of complicated form and thermal conditions.
