To obtain the fundamental knowledge on aeration or cavitation of oils, a bubble in oils, which contracted or disappeared due to surface tension, was observed under a microscope. Therefrom it is clear that adding additives and/or impurities to petroleum base oils makes the time required for a bubble to disappear longer ; and that an oxided substance a silicone defoamer, etc. can produce minute bubbles having a long life. Also, it is shown that the theory considering the interfacial resistance to diffusion due to adsorbed substances can explain the test results.
