Shock tubes with area change at diaphragm section have been widely used in many engineering fields, but the performance of such shock tubes is not sufficiently well known, especially about the effects on the performance of the diaphragm location and the shape of convergent section. In this paper, the effects on the performance of the diaphragm location, area ratio and convergent angle have been experimentally studied, and the results are obtained as follows : (1) To produce a stronger shock wave, it is better to set a diaphragm at the driver end of the convergent section. (2) The effect of convergent angle on the resultant shock wave is fairly great, so that it is necessary to consider it when designing the convergent section. (3) As the area ratio and the diaphragm pressure ratio are increased, the experimental shock Mach number becomes larger than Alpher-White's theoretical value.
