Ball-piston type hydraulic motors must be operated under conditions that the ball does not slide on the cam surface. That is, if the ball does not rotate but slides, a seizure occurs on the ball surface and consequently it scratches the spherical surface of the piston. For the reasons mentioned above an equation was derived to clarify the conditions. Then the coefficient of friction between the ball and the cam that influences the ball rotation was measured by an apparatus specially made for this purpose.
