• For obtaining the preliminary design data for MHD pumps, MHD power generators etc., the investigation of the flow of electrically conducting fluids in channels under an applied magnetic field is growing in importance. In this paper is reported an experimental and analytical study of flows in curved channels of rectangular cross section under a transversely applied magnetic field. Mercury is run in channels of relatively small radii of curvature where the secondary flow exerts a strong influence. The influence of the Reynolds number, the Hartmann number, the radius of curvature and the aspect ratio on the flow in curved channels is made clear, and an investigation with the aid of calculus of variations is also made.
