A theoretical analysis is carried out to study the effects of surface roughness on the characteristics of slipper bearings in mixed lubrication regime. The slipper tilting angle is assumed to be zero. Force due to hydrodynamic pressure and asperity contact are obtained based on the Patir and Cheg's average flow model and the Greenwood and Williamson's theory on random rough surfaces in contact, respectively. The effects of the roughness on the behaviour of the slipper and on the power loss are presented as parameters of the standard deviation of roughness, the ratio of the slipper diameter to the piston one and the operating conditions. As a result, it is shown that the slipper bearing gives smaller power loss in fluid lubrication regime at higher rotational speeds, and in mixed lubrication regime at lower ones.
