The breaking behaviour under a static three-point bending test of perforated notched specimens of flake and nodular graphite cast iron has been studied. The results obtained are summarized as follows : (1) When the position of the perforation is adequate, the load carrying capacity and the absorbed energy increase, compared with non-perforated notched test pieces ; (2) the improvement mentioned above is due either to (i) reduction of stress concentration at the root of the notch, or to (ii) increase of the propagating length of the crack.
