Three- and two-dimensional elastic analyses and comparative examination of both results have been made with scarf and butt joints. In adhesive layers, the stress condition is plane strain except in the vicinity of both free surfaces paralell to the scarf direction, and stresses are uniform except in the vicinity of another pair of free surfaces. Approximate values of those uniform stresses were obtained by simplified equations. At scarf angle of 52.47 degrees, uniform stress region expands into the latter free surfaces of adhesive layer. Stress concentration in those free surfaces increases with a change of scarf angle from 52.47 degrees. Stress distributions in the vicinity of free surfaces show mutual similarity on each aspect ratio of adhesive layers. The results of this analysis coincided well with the results of photoelastic analysis and with the strict solutions for butt joint.
