As an approach to a quantative study of knocking in an internal combustion engine, the measurement of end gas temperature has been one of the most important and interesting problems for many engineers and scientists. The author has developed a new method to attack this problem using a spectrum band of water vapor in the near infra-red region. The accuracy of the instrument is ±15°R for the temperature range of 800-1 200°R, and the responce is about 10^<-4> sec. The apparatus is applied to an end gas temperature measurement under the various engine conditions and the results are shown and discussed.
