When we consider the problems on the motion of the piston-rings in their grooves, on the frictional loss and the wear of rings and cylinder, the frictional forces of the rings must be noticed. Hither to, however, we have not known certainly a connection between the back-pressure and the actual contact pressure of ring and cylinder. In order to ascertain this connection, by mean of a more direct method, we have carried out following experiments : Compressed air (0-21 kg/cm^2) was acted on 1-ring or 2-rings, on the other hand a ring was pushed by springs on its back face. And the frictional forces were measured when a 76mm dia. cylinder moved 70mm stroke and 420 r.p.m., while a piston was rested in it, also lubricant oils and their temperatures were changed. Thus it was found that some pressure enterd the contact area, so the frictional force was not effected by the back pressure itself, but directly by a pressure difference between upper and lower sides of the ring. And tendency was found that the more the pressure difference becames, the higher the degree of the entered pressure rises.
