By measuring the variation of mechanical properties and specific gravity of metallic materials under fatigue process, it was intended to research the degree of work-hardening and also the growth of the minute crack. Elongation decreased remarkably with the number of repetitions. It was found that this was caused chiefly by the workhardening, not by the growth of minute crack. When cold-worked by simple tension, the metals showed the lower fatigue strength. This fact shows that the work-hardening relates fatigue strength indirectly. By bending the wire-or plate-form metals severely, we can minimize the number of repetitions to fatigue failure less than 50. How the minute crack grews in such a case was examined. By these experiments, it was concluded as follows : In fatigue process, the work-hardening first takes place by the stress reversal. And after that, minute crack, causes of which are very complex, grows very slowly with the number of repetitions. In succeeding step, the minute crack grows suddenly to the crack, shortly before fatigue failure.
