The amount of nip in laminated springs is determined in most factories by mere experience due to lack of its knowledge. (The theory introduced by H. Stark is fallacious in the assumptions). The writer calculates the total force necessary for fastening up the nipped plates, the increase in camber and the stresses in the plates due to fastening the plates. The calculation was made in accordance with the fact that, in the case of fastening the plates, the contact of the plates all along their lengths begins at the back-plate to the adjacent plate which in turn comes in contact with the third plate, and thus ends in the shortest one. The friction between the plates was neglected, and each plate was considered as a simple rectangular beam. The plates after having come in contact with one another were regarded as one beam, whose moment of inertia was equal to their sum. The results of numerical calculations made with several actual springs showed a good accord with those of the experiments.
