Universal measuring microscopes were manufactured by us in the Mitsui Precision Machinery and Eng. Co. Ltd. during the former half of nineteen forties. In will note some points over which we had taken great pains. As we could not get super high precision ball bearings, rollers were adopted to some parts as the guide of the movement of slides, and the results were pretty good. The finishing of the long semicylindrical surface in the longitudinal slide was very difficult. To avoid this, I thought, proper machine finishing or change of design would be necessary. I designed the high center which could measure the effective diameter too, but the observation microscope became somewhat larger. Generally speaking, I felt most seriously the necessity of satisfactory connections between mechanical and optical parts.
