This investigation presents a method for determining the complex shear modulus of damping materials from a torsional resonance test of a rectangular covered specimen with damping layer materials on bonded both sides of the elastic layer. In order to utilize this method, an expression of the torsional system is provided in this paper, which is based on an exact solution of torsional rigidity of the three-layered rod previously presented. The complex shear modulus for a damping rubber is determined by means of this method. The determined values are reliable up to the transition temperature range of the rubber, but they scatter above that temperature range. An error analysis for the covered specimen clarifies that the resultant errors of the complex shear modulus mainly depend on the accuracy of the elastic layer thickness and its measured shear modulus. The sandwich specimen is superior to the covered one due to the sufficient reduction of the resultant error over a wide range of damping materials.
