Investigations of microfluidics have more thoroughly characterized this type of flow than comparable studies in nanofluidics. While the current challenge in microfluidics is to develop effective transport mechanisms, more fundamental studies are required to control nanofluidics. Hydrogel actuators have been used as microvalves and may bridge traditional micromachining to potential nanoscale applications. Electrokinetic forces offer unique mechanisms for transporting, collecting, and sorting biomolecules in microfluidics. Fundamental studies of viscosity and slip boundary conditions address issues of drag and control for nanofluidics.
