A new non-intrusive vibration measurement system using an ultrasonic sensor in developed to monitor vertical pump bearing wear. The system can measure the rotating shaft vibration from outside of the pump casing by using ultrasonic pulse and echo signals. Using a vertical sump pump mockup test facility, comparison of the system with the conventional eddy current displacement sensor confirmed that the measurement accuracy and reproducibility of the system are sufficient for monitoring bearing wear. The system is also confirmed to be useful for the condition monitoring of pumps since it has higher sensitivity of bearing wear detection than the conventional accelerometer measurement.
