The improvement of reliability of rolling element bearing is important item for rotating machines. Many efforts have been paid for developing better monitoring and diagnosis method of rolling element bearing. This paper reviews the several methods for monitoring and diagnosis of rolling element bearing and proposes a direct method to evaluate the working condition of rolling element bearing. The method is based on the strain measurement of outer race of rolling element bearing. The signal can be applied for the following two purposes. (1) Life estimation of rolling element bearing as a actual load in operating condition. (2) Vibration diagnosis of rolling element bearing by special signal processing. For the first purpose, the direct calibration gives the useful information for evaluating the life of bearing. For the second purpose, the special attention is necessary for design of bearing housing and data processing, because the rolling element act as a fine window function. The consideration of geometrical limitation to realize the accurate vibration diagnosis without looseness of original signal characteristics was done. The theoretical consideration and model test show the better performance of the method compared to exciting methods.
