An On-line expert system based on vibration signature analysis concept that works on a turbogenerator to monitor and detect faults, if any, is described. The vibration signals are to be acquired from the HP, IP, LP turbine rotors and the generator bearing supports or from the shafts directly through non-contact probes. The time domain analog signals are converted to digital form and processed in frequency domain and then analyzed using an expert system. The expert system uses Sohre's database and lists five most probable faults, if any, upon analysis. The software also displays trend of important vibration data continuously for better monitoring. A system based on this concept is installed and operating on a 220MW turbogenerator of Kakrapar Atomic Power Station in western India and another is in the process of installation in Ropar thermal power plant in northern India.
