The paper describes General Electric's Remote Monitoring and Diagnostic (GE RM&D) system, its operation, its unique features, and some experiences in applying it to improve performance and availability of GE's heavy industrial products worldwide. A key success factor of GE's system is that it achieves its customer support objectives by relying upon an effective combination of advanced computer automation and technical experts who have an in-depth understanding of the equipment. The global RM&D systems enable GE experts to remotely access operational data of power plants, jet engines, railroad locomotives, medical scanners, etc. operating world wide, and to exercise sophisticated algorithms that can detect abnormal operating conditions. The experts, with ready access to in-depth knowledge about the equipment's design, operational and maintenance information and history, identify and track operational signatures that may indicate potential problems. The real key is to be able to distinguish false indications from the ones that are true early indicators of potential problems. In this paper we describe a design approach for developing a successful global RM&D system; including the role of GE's 6-Sigma quality initiative. We illustrate our approach through various examples of industrial heavy duty gas turbine diagnostics scenarios.
