Tissue engineering, aiming to the regeneration of biological tissue through the use of cells with the aid of supporting materials and/or bioactive molecules, has emerged as a potential alternative to tissue or organ transplantation. The biocompatibility of the supporting materials (scaffolds), as one of the three fundamental branches, has also received intensive studies. There are numerous approaches such as radiant, physical, and chemical ones to the modification of material surfaces. This presentation reviews our studies on surface tailoring for biocompatible materials with plasma and ion beam techniques. The researches reveal that these techniques are capable to control the chemical and physical properties of material surfaces without bulk changes. These properties are essential to the biocompatibility of materials or scaffolds for tissue engineering.
