As the therapeutic mechanisms of hypnosis, heightened interpersonal relationship and a specific structure called trance can be mentioned. The reasons for hypnosis being effective for the treatment of psychosomatic disorders may be summarized as follows : 1) Hypnosis is a somatopsychic method centering around the relaxation of mind and body, and thus it can give various changes to somatic symptoms. 2) Through the medium of hypnotic rapport, which is a deep human relationship, it is possible to support the ego of the patient who has negative attitudes and lead him to improve his positive expectancy. 3) In some cases, hypnotic suggestion can cause the artificial reproduction of symptoms, thus enabling the patient to have insight into the mind-body relation. Hypnosis can be applicable in the following situations or patients : 1) When symptoms are caused by anxiety and tension; when they are involved in a vicious circle with anxiety; when they are automatized, and when they are aggravated or fixed due to suggestions. 2) When a new symptom appears. 3) Patients with high suggestibility. 4) Patients who look for suggestive therapy 5) Disorders which have been proven successfully treatable by hypnosis (such as dyspnoea, vomiting, myalgia, chronic urticaria). 6) Differencial diagnosis for functional diseases 7) Deepening of rapport 8) Increasing of auto-suggestion 9) When other methods prove ineffective.
