Methods are described for determining traces of radioactive cesium in the ocean by collecting samples in an easily prepared blank-free selective absorber of copper ferrocyanide impregnated resin, determining radiocesium by gamma spectrometry, and measuring collection and analytical yield by flame spectrometry of natural cesium using a simplified purification scheme. Since 1965 the changing concentrations of fallout in the upper layers of the Pacific Ocean have been followed by concentrating samples of cesium at sea in cartridges containing highly selective cesium absorbers prepared for this purpose. This method permits collecting many 137Cs samples at sea using ships of opportunity under a wide variety of conditions, and without requiring any control of sample volume.
