The relationship between the peeling force of a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape (PSAT) and the rheological properties of the adhesives was studied. The peeling behavior may be treated by the following three processes : The first is the viscoelastic deformation of the adhesive, the second is the mechanics of the peeling due to bending of the substrate of a PSAT, and the last is the choice of suitable failure criterions. In the present study, the adhesives are represented by the 4-element viscoelastic mechanical model which contains two relaxation processes. After an appropriate simplification of the mechanics of the peeling, the interrelations among the peeling force, the peeling velocity of PSAT, the deformation energy and the deformation rate of the adhesive have been obtaind. When the work of deformation of the substrate is energy of the adhesive and the deformation rate varies in proportion to time. An equation, σ_b=A・exp(-B・λ_b), was adopted as a failure criterion, where σ_b and λ_b are the stress and the stretch ratio at the breaking point, respestively. The two positive constants, A and B are varied depending upon the modulus and /or the deformation rate of the adhesives. The effect of the viscoelastic properties characterizing the glass transition, rubbery plateau and flow regions on the peeling force was simulated by varying the parameters of the viscoelastic mechanical model. As the result, the following features were obtained. (1) The peeling force increases with increasing glass transition temperature. (2) The peeling force decreases with increasing modulus in the rubbery plateau region. (3) The peeling force is independent of the relaxation time in the flow region. The above features agreed qualitatively with the experimental data for natural rubber and acrylic PSAT. Thus, it is suggested that the viscoelastic properties of the adhesives play a dominant role on the peeling behavior of PSAT. However, no experimental evidence for the last feature was obtained in the present work. It is anticipated that the viscosity of the adhesive may become in important factor when the PSAT is applied to an adherent, and that the failure criterion used in this study may not be valid for the viscous failure.
