The rheopectic behavior of polymethacrylic acid in water, which was reported first by Eliassaf et al., was examined by using a Zimm-Crothers type viscometer. It was observed that the viscosity of relatively dilute solutions of high molecular weight samples (M^^-_V〜1×10^6) increased with increasing shearing time at the early stage, reached a maximum and then fell off gradually. More detailed studies on this time-dependency were made by changing the polymer concentration (0.05〜2.5%), temperature (30〜60℃) and shearing rate (0.5〜7.0 sec^<-1>). The ratio of the maximum value of viscosity to the initial one decreased with decreasing polymer concentration, but below 0.1% the time-dependent change disappeared completely, indicating the presence of a critical concentration. Light scattering measurements of stirred solutions showed a little increase in both scattering intensity R_<90゜> and the dissymmetry R_<45゜>/_<135゜> as compared with those of unstirred solutions. These results suggest that the time-dependent increase in viscosity may be attributed to the formations of molecular entanglement and some microgels induced by shearing. The intermolecular forces for such entanglement may be weak, because a little increase in temperature or shearing rate brought a considerable decrease in viscosity change. However, the relaxation time seems to be extremely long, for the value of viscosity did not return to the initial value even if the sample was left overnight after the cessation of shearing.
