Thin-walled tubular specimens subjected to constant tensile stresses superposed by cyclic torsional strain were examined both analytically and experimentally at several temperature levels as an example of the mechanical ratcheting. It was concluded that the center and the diameter of the yield surface under cyclic straining changed gradually while the surface rotated at any half cycle. The total ratcheting strain as the accumulation of plastic strain increments is also discussed. It is suggested that the analytical procedure for the stationary region of the ratcheting process should come after that for the transition region.
