Numerical analysis is performed for the deformation of incompressible or nearly incompressible soft rubber-like materials which contain hard elastic compressible particles in a high volume percentage. Special attention is paid to the volume change and Poisson's ratio of such a composite material when it is subjected to uniaxial tension. Numerical calculation is performed by the plain strain finite element method based on the Herrmann's variational theorem. This variational theorem is valid for all admissible values of Poisson's ratio. The ratio of Young's modulus of the particle to that of matrix E_p/E_m, used in the calculation varies from 1 to 10000. A little compressibility of the matrix is also considered. The result shows that Poisson's ratio of such a composite material can be considerably smaller than that of the matrix itself. The numerical results of the present analysis on Poisson's ratio agree with the results of the experiment previously carried out by the author et al. These suggest a modification of the previous assumption of incompressibility used for the analysis of solid propellant.
