Although the reliability of X-ray stress measurement has been remarkably improved, the accuracy of the measurement for hardened materials is not sufficient because of the broadness of the profile of the diffraction line. For the improvement of the accuracy and for the automation of X-ray stress measurement, a fully automatic X-ray stress measuring system using a small digital computer was developed. The step scanning mechanism was introduced for the scanning of the counter, in order to increase the sampling time without increasing the total time for measurements. A small digital computer HITAC10 having a memory of 12 K (16 bits) was used for data processing and automation. According to the results of the experiments using the new system, the accuracy of the measurement is expected to be approximately ± 1 kg/mm^2 for hardened materials. Moreover the time for measurement was reduced to 40 to 60 min, that is 1/3-1/2 of the time necessary for an ordinary apparatus. The reason for the improvement in accuracy is explained by an analysis based on statistical fluctuation, by T. Shiraiwa and Y. Sakamoto.
