The progress of X-ray stress measurement in Japan for past 10 years is reported. The progress is ascribed to the efforts of the Committee of Mechanical Behavior of Materials, J. S. M. S. The committee has had extensive joint studies and established the standard method of the X-ray stress measurement which has several significant characteristics so as to be applicable on the industrial problems. The counter method, parallel beam method, Cr X-rays, sin^2ψ method and half maximum width method were adopted as the standard method, and the X-ray elastic constant was determined experimentally. Effects of various conditions of measurement on accuracy were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Instrumentation is now under further development, and it aimes to shortening the measurement time, easy handing, application on complex shape material, application on coarse grain material and application of computer.
