Fracture toughness of Si_3N_4 ceramics with and without addition of TaSi_2 particles, prepared by hot-pressing at 1750℃ and 1650°-1750℃, respectively, was determined. The fracture toughness increased significantly with increasing TaSi_2 content. The enhanced toughness by the addition of TaSi_2 particles was interpreted to be due to the residual compressive stress resulting from the larger thermal expansion coefficient of TaSi_2 than that of Si_3N_4.
