A X-ray diffractometer specially designed for stress measurement is described, where parallel X-ray beam obtained with the Sollar slit is used instead of focusing beam which is usually used in the diffractometer. Compared with the focusing method, parallel beam method has the following characteristics ; (1) No error of account is recognized in the diffraction angle even by a few mm's shift of specimen from the correct position. (2) While focussing condition is changed in the case of oblique incidence of X-ray, geometrical relation suffers no change in the parallel beam method. In the present experiments sin^2 φ method was applied and results were obtained as follows : (1) Reasonable coinicidence was seen between stress values from X-ray diffraction and those from strain gage. (2) Residual stresses of quenched nickel chromium steel (JIS SNC3) were measured. (3) Residual stresses and diffraction line widths of carbon steel specimens (JIS SK5) of various hardness were measured.
